Jason's Countryside Experience

Many travelers come to Cambodia for Angkor Wat or to learn about its difficult past, but they often miss what makes this country truly special.

We created Jason’s Countryside Experience for travelers who want to connect with the people and culture that shape Cambodia today.

Our Countryside Tour take you into the rural parts of Kampot, in the communities where we live. We'll teach you about the traditions, the culture, and meet the people that make Cambodia special.

We want you to experience the Cambodia that we know and love, and to see for yourself why it’s known as the Kingdom of Wonder.

We use bicycles at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops, flat terrain, and time to rest. Moving at this pace allows for easy interaction with local people and a closer connection to the places we visit.

Culture

Cambodia’s culture is built on stories, beliefs, and traditions that have been passed down for centuries.

Learn more

You’ll visit pagodas, shrines, and spirit houses to see how faith shapes daily life in Cambodia. Along the way, you’ll hear the local myths and legends that influence customs and beliefs, and discover how Buddhism, Hinduism, and older animist traditions blend together in everyday practice. Through these stories and places, you’ll begin to understand how Cambodians view their history, their faith, and their place in the world.

“Jason is incredibly knowledgeable about Cambodian history and culture, and you can tell he truly loves to share it with people.”

Tradition

Just outside the city, traditional farming and village life continue alongside signs of modern change.

Learn more

You’ll see how many rural families still farm and live much as they have for generations. Many families live in wooden stilt houses, while newer brick homes and cars now stand beside them. Electricity and running water only became common in much of the countryside little more than a decade ago, bringing changes and opportunities. The tour offers a close look at how rural Cambodia is evolving, where traditional living continues alongside a slowly modernizing way of life.

“We passed through rice field, monastery, school, rural countryside, palm sugar farm.. One of the most interesting tour we ever did.”

People

Cambodia’s story lives not just in its history and legends, but in the warmth and spirit of its people.

Learn more

As we travel through the countryside, you’ll meet families who welcome us into their communities. You’ll share meals, visit small farms, and see daily life unfold in the fields and villages around you. These moments of kindness and connection reveal the true heart of Cambodia, found not in its monuments or museums but in its people

“We were the only tourists in sight, greeted by friendly locals who weren’t used to seeing tourists.”

We’ll explore the countryside just outside Kampot, far from tourist attractions and busy sights. Each stop offers a glimpse into real village life, with routes that change by season and what’s happening locally. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Visit three pagodas, from the mainstream to the more rural and traditional, learning about how Buddhism is practiced in Cambodia today.
  • Visit rice growing communities and learn about rice harvesting and farming.
  • A visit to a muslim village, where we’ll learn the history of the Cham people in Cambodia.
  • See how palm sugar is made at a traditional family farm using age-old methods.
  • The highlight of the tour is a home-cooked Khmer meal with Vin and her family in their 120-year-old wooden house, where you’ll also hear her family’s moving story of resilience.
  • Along the way, your guide will share countless fascinating insights into everyday Cambodian life, turning even the smallest details into stories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included
  • Good quality mountain bicycle.
  • Bicycle helmets
  • All drinks, including water, iced coffee/tea, coconuts, etc...
  • A home-cooked traditional Khmer lunch at Vin’s house
What to wear

There’s no strict dress code, but the sun can be very strong, especially in the hot season. A wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves are highly recommended to stay cool and protected. In rural villages, skin-tight activewear can feel out of place, so aim for lightweight, breathable layers that keep you comfortable and respectful.

Dietary needs

We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, nut-free, and most other dietary needs. Please just let us know when you book so we can plan the lunch menu in advance.

Children

Unfortunatly, we don't have child-sized bicycles or baby seats, but we do have smaller bicycles that suit most riders 12+ years old. If you’re unsure about fit, we’re happy to schedule a quick try-out the day before your tour.

Ride pace & distance
  • 9:00 a.m. departure. Return by 4:30-5:30 p.m.
  • ~20 km on flat countryside roads. About 3 hours of cycling total.
  • No hills, a relaxed pace, and frequent stops.
  • Sutible for almost all fitness levels.

The tour around the countryside and it monestaries and temples is incredible, we were the only tourists there, that's how exculsive this tour is. At each stop Jason would explain or tell us interesting facts and stories and buy us fresh water. We stopped to eat at a local family's house it was DELICIOUS !!! The cycling is easy, the road is good, and Jason's company is wonderful. This was my favorite activity in Kampot! THANKS AGAIN JASON !!”

“Jason gave us a great experience cycling through the city, taking us to some places we wouldn't have went to without him. He did an incredible amount of research and it showed throughout the tour. It was very fascinating and well paced. We had lunch at a Vin's house, which was honestly one of the best meals we've had throughout our Cambodia trip. She was so kind, and shared her difficult story with us to further educate us on the history of the country. This tour is an absolute must if you are in the area, preferably at the beginning of your Kampot days! Jason is very helpful in sharing his other recommendations of what to do around the area.”

“An excellent day tour through the local countryside, easy cycling on high quality bikes. Jason entertains and captivates with his knowledge across history, culture, nature and the local people (many locals are also friends). Jason provides drinks throughout the day but a massive highlight was the lunch provided by Vin. We sat as a group and enjoyed multiple dishes (the fish was delicate and the pork was knock out!). It was such a welcoming experience and made easy by Jason's involvement in the local culture. Yes, it is tourism that rewards locals but it was also a lot of fun.”

“YOU HAVE TO DO THIS TOUR!! Honestly, one of the best tours I've ever did. Unbelievable what Jason knows about the history of Asia. I love the way he explained it, it was informativ and funny. I had a million questions and he answered them all patiently and in detail. The visited places were very unique (schools, local restaurants, local house). Without him you could never have such an experience. The lunch was the best food we had in Cambodia. Big thank you to Vin. Thank you Jason!!”

“I got recommended the evening tour by a girl in the hostel I stayed. It was my first day and I recommend to do the evening tour with Jason your first day in Kampot if you got the opportunity. It is simply amazing. Easy walk around the city to learn about the history of Kampot and all the worth spots. He knows truly so much you can ask anything. I found it very enriching. I also asked him for suggestions on what to do the next day on my own. I liked it so much that I also did the bicycle tour with him and it was, without any doubt, the highlight of my days in Kampot. He shared a bunch of knowledge about Cambodia history, culture, traditions, and people. A great guide, and mainly a experience that's hard to find in any other places I've visited in Cambodia”

“We did Jason's countryside tour on bicycles and it was excellent. He took us out of town to see Cambodian country and farm life, riding through beautiful green rice fields. Jason is an absolute wealth of knowledge, so come armed with all your questions about Cambodia and SE Asia. And the home cooked lunch is a particular highlight. Delicious local food cooked by the lovely Vinh! Highly recommend if you are keen to go slightly off the stock standard tourist track and see parts of the country you otherwise might not.”

“Jason gave one of the best tour experiences we've had in three months of travelling SEA. A genuine insight into local life, customs and traditions as well as an informed explanation of Cambodian history that added lots of context to other places we visited in the country. Dinner in a local Cambodian house was really tasty, and the bikes hired were in great condition. Riding was completely safe, not too strenuous with lots of stops, water and shade, and the scenery was stunning as well.”

“This was the highlight of my stay in Kampot! Jason, having immersed himself in Kampot life for the last number of years, is not just another expat. His passion, respect for and genuine appreciation of the local customs, religion and cultural particularities were evident. He is an excellent story teller, and I really appreciated his contextualisations and shrewd observations of many aspects of Cambodian society. What I particularly loved about this tour was Jason's connections to the local community. He makes every effort to put your money back into the businesses and people that make Kampot special. The opportunity to eat authentic Cambodian food (which was significantly better than anything I've had in a restaurant) is reason enough to do this tour!”

“Had a brilliant tour with Jason who took us around the local villages and temples. He was extremely knowledgeable about Cambodia and its history. We really enjoyed our tour and would put it at the top of our list for tours while traveling. He rented us very new mountain bikes and took a leisurely pace to cycle. We stopped at a few stops to have a chat and learn some history in a nice shaded temple. He then brought us to a lovely local family who welcomed us in with a traditional Cambodian meal, which was amazing. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area to get in contact with him.”

“Quite simply the best tour we've had after months of traveling in Southeast Asia. Jason offered an incredible deep-dive into Cambodian culture and history - this is so much more than just another sight-seeing tour! Part tour guide, part history teacher, and part anthropologist, Jason was able to share all his insight and knowledge at a digestible pace along with a good sense of humour. The bike ride through the countryside was stunning as well, and the lunch was fantastic. This tour really reminded us why we travel: to learn about different cultures, broaden our perspectives, and allow ourselves to briefly step into another's shoes. If you only do one thing in Kampot, do this tour.”

“We ended up going to some beautiful monasteries that had no other tourists, just local kids running to school and monks going about their day to day activities. Jason is also a big time history buff and could give lectures on Cambodian history in a super engaging way. He also gives back half of the tour's payment back to the local community, and sets up lunch at a local's house for a homemade cuisine. Highly recommended!”

“This was one of the most interesting and genuine experiences I've had in all of Asia. Jason is an incredibly intelligent person with genuine interest and passion for history, culture and any topic really. I learned so much about the culture, history, religions/beliefs and local way of life. Any question you have, he has covered. The lunch was the most incredible local cuisine. The rice fields and villages were beautiful to ride through. Don't think twice about supporting this local business. Hop on a bike and go on a journey, take the time to more deeply understand Cambodia..you won't regret it :)”

“We had a wonderful time biking around the outskirts of the city with Jason! It felt like we got to see the "real" Kampot beyond just the typical tourist sites. Jason took us through monasteries, rice fields, local villages, and had great in-depth history and knowledge to share along the way. It was a super fun and interesting way to get to know the area and Cambodia life/culture! We even had a delicious homemade lunch at a local's house. The road is a bit bumpy so I'd recommend good shoes and a good hat/long sleeves for a day biking in the sun! The bike ride was leisurely and at an easy pace - not a problem if you know how to bike. Plenty of rest stops and water! Highly recommend this tour!”

“Favorite day in Cambodia! Not only is Jason just an all around great guy to spend the day with but I learned more today than my three weeks in Cambodia. His curiosity and love of Cambodia and the people really shine. I try to use local providers as much as possible but having an expat as a guide for the day was really enlightening. All the things he has learned and found interesting in his time in Cambodia was shared and he is a great story teller. It was a great day cycling through the red dirt roads, popping in to local's homes he has befriended and all the monasteries. The lunch at a local family's home was the best meal I've had yet in Cambodia. Can't recommend enough!”

“Jason's tour is a highlight. On that we saw the everyday life of a special kind of monastery, e.g. with a public elemantary school in it. What a joy to watch the children during their school classes. They loved us, the tourists, and we loved them ,the little, joyful pupils. The meal was excellent, and we received not only descriptions of what we saw on the tour, but explanations into the history. Very interesting, very deep and knowlegable. Jason gave us enough water. The bicycles were good, who wished got a helmet, and his assistent, tommy, who lives here since 11 years, supervised us and managed our security in the traffic and so on. He was ready to intervene in any case of emergency. That gave us a good feeling in a foreign world. Thank you jason, thank you tommy.”

“If you think this is just a bicycle tour, your are wrong. It is so much more than that! You will cycle past small villages, see beautiful temples and monastries, without a tourist in sight. The lunch at a local family's house was delicious. Also, you can see how passionate Jason is about Cambodia. He will give you a lot of political, cultural and historical information about the country. With this tour, I saw places and learnt things I would never have seen or learnt otherwise.
